On Friday, April 23rd, "Fighting Cancer at Hoops", a party to benefit and promote the American Cancer Society's 2010 Relay for Life, took place from 7pm until midnight at Hoops Sports & Spirits, 2705 Lapeer Road in Auburn Hills (a few seconds south of the Palace of Auburn Hills). A $5 cover charge included hors d'oeuvres bar, Red Wing Stanley Cup auction and drink discounts. ALL proceeds went to the American Cancer Society.

Jimmy Allen, who has owned and operated Hoops since 1992, graciously allowed "Team Lynch" to use the facility free of charge. "This benefit party is a way for me to give back", says, Jimmy.

Gene Andrus of Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors in Clawson and close friends came up with the idea of the fund raising effort. "Team Lynch", who is helping sponsor this event was the top fund raising team in last year's Clawson Relay. They raised over $6,500 and are looking to raise even more this year. "As a funeral director for nearly twenty-five years, I have seen the devastation that cancer has caused to families and I've personally lost a number of relatives to the disease that has taken too much" says Gene. "No one wants a cure to be found more than us."

Relay For Life has become the major fund raising event of the American Cancer Society since its birth in 1986. Originating in the United States, the event has spread to 21 countries worldwide. Although the main objective of the Relay is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event is also held to spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight against cancer. It is estimated that Relay For Life events have raised over 3 billion dollars to date.

The Clawson Relay for Life will be held May 1st and 2nd 10am - 10am at the Clawson City Park located on Elmwood Street between Crooks Road and Main Street.
