Of the myriad of funeral service topics to which we introduce our students here at DMACC, perhaps the most difficult to communicate to them is the profound impact that a quality embalming procedure has on a grieving family. Our students are generally focused on the immediate tasks at hand in the clinical lab setting and as a result are often not able to receive any feedback from the work we do with our partner funeral homes. Similarly, our textbooks extol the value of embalming and how it facilitates the grieving process by allowing the bereaved to confront the reality of the death but until one stands with a family at the casket of their loved one or personally experiences the healing benefits of the viewing, it is difficult to grasp just how valuable the service we provide truly is. In August 2008, I had just such an opportunity. What follows is my personal experience during the days following the death of my son, Jace. I have shared this experience with my students in an attempt to demonstrate the power that we as skilled embalmers and funeral directors have to bring healing to families who have experienced the ultimate loss. I would now like to share it with you. icon The Value of the Viewing (139.12 kB)
